First birthday & cake smash ideas

One year of your life, twenty minutes of theirs — here is how to make the cake smash fun and the photos gorgeous.

Choosing a theme and colour

We build the set around one colour or theme you choose — soft neutrals, pastel balloons, a jungle or floral backdrop. Picking a palette first makes everything, from outfit to cake to props, come together.

What actually happens

We photograph a few clean, dressed-up frames first, then bring in the cake and let your baby decide what to do with it. Most are suspicious for two minutes and then commit entirely. We capture the mess honestly.

The cake

You can bring your own, or we arrange one with a local baker that matches your colours. Order two days ahead so we can plan the set around it. A simple, soft cake smashes best.

Outfits and practicalities

Bring a change of clothes, feed your baby beforehand but not right before, and aim for mid-morning after a good nap. Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes — the honest limit at this age.

Family in the frame

Parents and siblings are welcome and included in our larger baby packages. Some of the best frames are a big brother trying to help and failing.

Questions we get asked

Before you ask

Do you provide the cake?
You can bring your own or we arrange one with a local baker in your colours — just ask two days ahead.
How long does a cake smash take?
About 45 to 60 minutes, which is the honest limit at this age. We work around naps and feeds.
What age is a cake smash for?
The first birthday, around twelve months. A six-to-nine-month sitter session pairs perfectly with it.
